How to mail a PDF to someone in a New Hampshire prison

Personal letters and printed pages go directly to the person’s NHDOC facility. New Hampshire is not on a statewide scan-to-tablet system — the incarcerated person receives the physical mail after inspection.

Covers New Hampshire Department of Corrections (NHDOC) state prisons and related custody sites. County jails and federal facilities in New Hampshire have separate rules and addresses.

Format & content rules

  • Incoming resident mail is limited to 10 pages per letter (Cor 314.06). Split longer PDFs into multiple envelopes.
  • Handwritten correspondence must use black or blue ink pen or pencil. Printed PDF pages are treated as “internet printings” or photocopies under Cor 314.05(g) — they must be on standard white letter-size paper (8½″ × 11″), unaltered, and comply with all other mail rules.
  • Use unscented standard white copy, printer, or loose-leaf paper. Greeting cards, decorated postcards, unusually thick stationery, stickers, glitter, adhesive materials, colored pencil, crayon, marker, gel pens, and lipstick are prohibited.
  • No binding attached to pages. A single staple is not considered “bound” — staff may remove it and forward the mail.
  • All non-privileged mail is opened in the mailroom, may be read, and may be copied. The incarcerated person receives the physical mail after screening — not a statewide scan-only delivery.
  • Mail without the resident’s full name and DOC ID in the address may be returned as insufficient. A return name and address on the envelope is required.
  • Do not enclose cash, checks, or other negotiable instruments with a PDF mailing — contraband or unauthorized funds are handled under NHDOC policy.
  • Content can still be withheld under Cor 314.09 if it threatens security, contains prohibited depictions, constitutes unauthorized business correspondence, or otherwise violates policy.

Document mailing checklist

  1. Confirm the person is in NHDOC custody and look up their DOC ID and current facility.
  2. Match the facility to the published mailing address on NHDOC’s Inmate Communications page.
  3. Keep the packet at or under 10 pages per envelope; split longer documents.
  4. Print on standard white letter-size paper; do not staple, tape, or glue pages together.
  5. Address with full name + DOC ID + facility name, include your return address, and mail as personal correspondence.
